Accounting/Distribution Systems

The accounting and distribution systems we install are tightly linked with the outside world. Statements, invoices, PO's etc can be immediately sent out via e-mail or fax. Customers can be notified when their order has shipped and given tracking numbers so they know when it will arrive.

We have many years of extensive hands-on, experience with The Southware Excellence Series® for small to mid-sized companies as well as Passport Business Systems (formerly RealWorld Classic Accounting ®) for smaller businesses.

Platform

Servers, workstations and the connections to tie it all together. We are Novell Silver Partners and have had great success during the past year installing the Novell Open Workgroup Suite. This is a Linux-based platform that brings the best of the Linux/Unix world and the best of Netware into a single server platform.

In the past, our mission critical applications (accounting/distribution) required a Unix server for maximum performance and reliability. However, office productivity requirements (file/print, e-mail, etc.) were better served by a Novell Netware environment. The new systems we are installing now run enterprise quality Groupwise e-mail and collaboration (calendaring) software, they are centrally (and remotely) administered and run the mission critical Accounting/Distribution applications as native Linux. Of course, we put a graphical "thin-client" front-end on these applications for the enjoyment of our users at Windows workstations.

Custom Software

The capability we are most proud of is our programming talents. Designing and implementing custom applications that dramatically improve a client's business is the most rewarding aspect of our industry.

The majority of custom systems we do these days are built upon the highly customizable Southware Excellence Series. However, there are still times when the uniqueness of an application requires us to start from scratch. In this case, we select the platform, language and database management system that will provide the most optimal result.

Historically, many of our custom applications were written in Microsoft Visual Foxpro. Today, with the advent of more capable and compatible web browsers, we are starting to see the capabilities to do applications as rich as the Foxpro apps but running in a web browser! The buzzwords are Service 2.0, Saas, Web 2.0 and AJAX. These new technologies are to be credited for the enhanced web experiences you may have already encountered at sites like Google Mail, Netflix and YouTube.

We are now developing database-driven web applications using a Rapid Development Framework known as Ruby on Rails--which is the tool used to develop the wildly successful Twitter.com site. Typically, our backend database is MySQL, but Rails makes it easy to use any popular engine such as Oracle or DB2.
